Frequently Asked Questions

How many Laser Hair Removal treatments will I need?

The MOD Medspa recommends a minimum of six treatments. There are a variety of factors that can influence the total number of treatments any individual may require to achieve the desired results. To ensure maximum results, we recommend doing a treatment once every 6-8 weeks.

What is a Laser Hair Removal appointment like?

The area to be treated will be shaved. The laser will produce a beam of highly-concentrated light. The light emitted by the light sheer diode laser is absorbed by the hair’s pigment. The laser pulses for a fraction of a second, just long enough to vaporize the dermal papilla, disabling several follicles at a time to eliminate or significantly impede the hair’s growth.

The MOD Medspa’s special contact-cooling handpiece cools and protects the surrounding skin while it brings the laser energy as close as possible to the hair root. The cooling tip has a mild anesthetic property, which allows tender areas to be treated in a relatively painless fashion. You will feel a tingling or stinging sensation during the treatment, but most people tolerate the procedure well. Topical anesthetic is available to increase your comfort, if you choose.

What can I expect after treatment?

Following your treatment, you may experience a sunburn-type sensation in the treated area for several hours. For the first few weeks the hairs will slowly slough off and at first it will look as if you have more hair. This will fall out and after a few weeks, the area will be smooth and hairless.

How do I prepare for a Laser Hair Removal appointment?

As with any procedure where safety and comfort are key, history of previous treatments, medications, allergies and pigmentary problems will be discussed with the The MOD Medspa service providers prior to the laser treatment. You must avoid sun for four to six weeks before and after your treatment.

Is Laser Hair Removal safe for pregnant women?

That depends. Pregnancy restricts the use of topical anesthetics and may present some other challenges. While there is no evidence to suggest that pregnant women cannot be treated safely, it is our policy not to treat without written permission of the client’s physician. When you come for your consultation, we can discuss the particulars of what you would like to have done and review your options.

What are the differences between laser hair removal, electrolysis and waxing?

While all options are fantastic for both temporary and long term results, the type of client that is a good candidate is the most important part in receiving the most ideal results. Laser hair removal provides clients with permanent hair reduction. The ideal person will have dark pigmented hair as the laser is attracted to the pigment in the hair. This is how it targets and damages the hair in its follicle. We recommend shaving a few days to a week prior to treatment. It is very important not to have any tan, including self-tanner, because the laser could pick up on the pigmentation in the skin and not just the hair and lead to the risks of pigment changes in the skin. We can treat clients with darker skin tones as long as the hair is darker than the skin. Generally, six treatments, done 4-6 weeks apart, are recommended for best results. This provides each phase of hair growth with more than one laser treatment.
